Billy Crystal Brooklyn Theatre reviews
Wonderfully talented
"When Billy Crystal: 860 noted that he hadn't come up with any new material yet, I was skeptical. Amazingly, he was able to ad-lib for at least the first hour, connecting wonderfully with the crowd, revealing his own motivations, challenges, and life story. Through all the jokes and laughter, he found humor in the things that unite all our cultures, challenged us to laugh with each other and at ourselves, not cancel. Above all, he left us inspired to create a better future through sharing laughter and joy found in the peculiarities of our cultures. What a great evening. He left feeling moved in a positive sense."
Fantastic show -- high-energy performance
"Despite differences in styles respectively, all the musicians in each band performed together, singing each other's songs, igniting the crowd and sounding great together. A few keyboardists (at one time, three), a pianist, several guitarists, drummer, and even a tambourine or two were typically on stage at all times, in addition to several vocalists. The show was high-energy with lots of jumping around (on stage and off) as well as calmer with some slow songs, including Adam Duritz on piano doing "A Long December," a crowd favorite. The opening song was the Crows' "Films About Ghosts" with about 20 people on stage, all performing together. Augustana frontman Dan lost himself in the lyrics as he played for an applauding audience. Michael Franti wowed the crowd with his energetic reggae style and guitar playing. All the bands (Billy Crystal: 860, Spearhead and Augustana) are excellent individually, but all the musicians in each band performed together, singing each other's songs, igniting the crowd and sounding great together. There was no problem of having a lame opening act and a great main act.
The friend I took was not familiar with many Billy Crystal: 860 or Augustana songs and had never heard Spearhead -- but now claims Michael Franti as a favorite artist. This show was well worth the money."
